After the birth of Jesus we fully understood that God had the form of three persons that we can know and communicate with!
In the Old Testament they were told that there was only one God and not to have a god for the sun, moon, rain, fertility, or harvest. Moses told the children of Israel to love their one God. ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.’ Deuteronomy 6:4
There was not an individual god to care for all their individual needs – there was one God to care for all their needs!
Once Jesus came and fulfilled the Old Testament, then we better understood that our God has three personalities.
Father – Son – Holy Spirit
I found this to be helpful in my prayers. I can pray to God and that is certainly acceptable and right. But I can pray more specifically to one of the persons that are God. (I have to admit this is a hard concept for some to understand or even believe. But I believe it to be so.)
These are the roles we humans understand God to be in three persons:
Father – Creator, Redeemer, Wisdom, Love
Son – Savior, and Mediator – He was our example of how to be a human
Holy Spirit – Comforter, Guide, Helper – He convicts, teaches and leads us if we listen
So when I want to understand how to love better, I can pray to the Father who is love.
When I am tempted I can pray to Jesus because He also faced every temptation I will face, AND He did not give in to those sins!
Or when I am in need of some guidance, I can ask Holy Spirit to help me.
Somewhat similar, but not a complete comparison – I think of myself. I am a son, husband and father.
Butch and Sharon know me as a son, Cindy knows me as a husband, and Danielle and Austin know me as dad. I am John Grigsby, but they know me as different persons.
But I get even more granular than that. People at Richland Baptist know me as an elder and Sunday School teacher. Some fantastic public speakers know me as a Toastmaster. I have some old rough buddies that know me as an Army infantry sergeant. Some even older friends know me from high school and playing in the band.
I am the same person who matured, learned, and aged – but I’m still the same guy.
God has not aged or matured. He has always been, is everywhere now, and will always be.
He is close as a whisper and has all knowledge, wisdom and power. How thankful I am to be able to communicate with God!
